Awareness and Self-localization:
The resource of spacial presence that our ancestors knew and lived, both human and animal, is still available to us in the modern world. Uncovering and developing this resource for application in the contemporary context is fundamentally healing, empowering and accessible.
There are powerful primal underpinnings to why physical awareness of ourselves, the people around us, and the space we are in, is a skill to develop. Presence training is practising spacial awareness, leading to deeper experiences of the present moment.
With practice we can be more alert to changes in our environment, socially and physically, allowing us to respond with initiative and care. Being present to the physical space we are in is an essential element in relaxation, confidence, and understanding of our present context.
Being centred in the space can lead to deepening awareness of the way other people are in the space, and by extension, the shifting dynamic of group consciousness. As natural beings, we have in times past had a deeper relationship with the natural world, grounded in connection to space and place.
The methods involved in training and improving this experience need to both address the barriers or challenges to being present, and develop the skills that allow a state of presence. More advanced practice results in a sophistication and deepening of the spacial experience. The biggest barrier to presence will be different for different people, but the main one is anxiety or tension.
If we take that tension on the spectrum of relaxation, and also that we can get better at relaxing, then the process begins with methods to move from tension or resistance towards an relaxed awareness. The word transmutation is the best suited to describing this process.
With practice, we can take the physical, spacial, social, mental and spiritual condition as presenting in the moment, and use it as a teacher to transform. Further integrative practice leads to mastery.
The ancient rawness of the primary experience is accessible through practice, and there are effective ways to talk about it.

Embodiment Practice:Centering:
The center is the middle of the axis between above and below, forward and back, left and right. Centering is improving sensitivity to ones physical center, and the way we experience gravity, balance, and stillness. Breath and Relaxation: Relaxation is a spectrum from tension to softness. Very deep relaxation is possible with good breathing practice. Relaxation allows access to the softer and subtler range of experience in the body. When the body is relaxed, the parasympathetic nervous system can operate, allowing rest and digestion. This is essential in healing, allowing new connections to be made. Strengthening: Strengthening awareness is essential to being more present socially. Without confidence in our physical structure, our ability to set physical boundaries, and negotiate conflict, we loose the ability to be present to ourselves and the space. Moving: Movement is exploration, it is training the body to experience difference. It wakes up our sensitivity to the space, to others, and to the deeper layers of presence. The way in which we move is important. Conscious movement is a very focused use of attention to learn more about moving. Playing: Improvisation is creativity in motion. When we play, we draw on what we have discovered through practice. The liberation of enjoyment in play is essential to connecting more deeply with the body, and being more present. Environment: What can the body do? What are we physically capable of? Where can we take ourselves, what are we frightened of? The body in the present moment is the interface between internal and the external world. We can use the environment to learn about our physicality, and develop deeper experiences of the present moment. |
